CHAPTER 6

HAYDEN

The gentle lull of the gulf is something I never mind waking up to. What makes it even better? The warm body snuggled up against mine as I hold Bristol against me. I open my eyes to find her beautiful hazel orbs already looking at me.

As I watch her, my lips quirk into a smirk and her cheeks pink in the most beautiful way. I cup her face with my hand, my thumb running back and forth across her soft skin. She’s trouble wrapped up in a beautiful package and I knew it the moment I met her.

“Good morning,” her voice is soft and sweet as she looks at me before her gaze darts away and she bites her lip.

“Morning, Trouble,” I chuckle.

Have I ever felt so good waking up before? Has it ever felt so right waking up next to another person?

It’s not uncommon for me to spend the night on my boat even though I have a place on the island. I’ve always been drawn to the water and its calming presence. Calming and dangerous, just like the woman in my arms.

She’s a storm on the horizon, one you see coming in and are powerless against. I’ve never wanted to be stuck in the rain without any protection more in my life than I do right now.

“Uh,” she shifts a little in the bed and all it does is press her naked skin against mine causing a groan to leave my lips. “We should probably get back to the marina?” She looks unsure and it’s not something I like to find on her features at all. “I don’t think I rented that little boat for this long.”

My smirk drops and I grip the back of my woman’s head. Her eyes snap to mine and widen as she takes in my features. I’m sure I don’t look nice right now and I’m not going to apologize for it.

“I was serious yesterday, Bristol. Don’t do something like that again,” fear and anger mix in my plea.

When her small hands glide up my chest, I relax and can push away all the thoughts of what could have gone wrong to the side. It’s not easy though. A sand bar was the mildest problem she could have come up against.

“I won’t,” she whispers. “I’m sorry.”

Last night I couldn’t get enough of her. I made love to my woman over and over again, needing to feel her, needing to assure myself that she was there in front of me and safe. I didn’t get to ask her an important question.

“Why?”

She blinks up at me, her eyes tracking back and forth over my face. “You scare the hell out of me, Hayden.”

My eyebrows pull together, and I look deep into her eyes, so deep I swear I can see right into her soul. The way it writhes, the way it glows, the way it sings for me. I start nodding slowly because I can understand being afraid. I can understand being unsure.

Hell, I’m scared and I’m unsure.
